Spyware - What is It? Must Know Facts If You Are Really Concerned About Your Online Safety

Background information on Spyware

Pop-up ads (too many advertisements appearing on the top of a content window automatically) can be seen on many computers that are mostly used by newbies – new PC and non techie users who are new to operating computers. What many normal online surfers don’t feel is that those multiple distracting ads are not coming on their own but due to some malicious software, i.e., spyware (spy + ware). Till a normal user, especially newbie find out the culprit behind these unwanted and time wasting ads in a few days or months time, the spyware get so much spread up that the infected PC user decides to format and install everything once again in hope that those auto appearing nonsense ads would not popup again. And, if those newbies don't do anything new except praying and hoping that those unwanted ads do not appear again, then those popups will start appearing again. It becomes quite bad and stressful situation where the infected PC user (infected by spyware) cannot do much work on PC because of these ad windows that show lot of ads and have to be closed as they come on the top of the window on which the user is currently working.

What Spyware Simply Is?

Spyware is a type of malicious code or software that is designed by coders who wants to monitor (spy) computer user activities, specially personal ones so that they can send offers matching user's interests via those unwanted popup ads, generated by spyware software.

Spyware software is also designed to alter computer settings in some or other way to cause damage (not physical) to a computer (making it too much slow as lot of resources are consumed in generating ads, sending reports and infecting other networked computers). The term spyware is made of spy and ware and may look like that the software is simply a monitoring system in a secret manner (without the PC user knowing it that spyware is there on his/her PC), the real work of spyware for which it is used usually goes well ahead of this. The spyware creators and distributors usually make great profits by sending sponsored targeted advertisements matching user preferences (known via URL's and keywords typed by user) or selling off the computer user's personal details. Really dangerous, Isn't it?

When the nonsense (in PC user’s perspective) spyware software is installed on a computer, its installation is not known to that PC's user. Almost 60% of online computers are infected by the dangerous spyware and out of these spyware infected PC's users, 90% do not know that their PC is infected with risky software - spyware that is prying on their activities on their PC. The reason why 90% of computer users are not aware of spyware is the simple fact that they never did any installation of spyware to the best of their knowledge. The entry made by spyware was not permitted by these users in a clear manner; it was hidden and was done in a deceitful way.

Differences or Dissimilarities between Spyware and Adware

A spyware makes an entry in a PC in a malicious manner, not clearly known to the customer, usually via user's agreement to the lengthy and confusing policies (agreements) that has to be accepted while installing free popular software, enticing to a PC user (such as downloading latest movies for free). When the user agrees to install a free popular software without reading the licensing terms properly, the spyware also gets installed along with that software without the computer searcher realizing that he/she has also given consent for that spyware to be installed and thus his/her surfing habits to be tracked and unwanted ads to be shown. The idea of spyware ads is to make money hoping that the user will click on these ads and then buy something (affiliate commissions).

Peer to Peer software tools/clients and downloaded files usually have spyware infections.

Spyware infections are dangerous as spyware track each keystroke of the user operating the spyware infected PC.

Both Spyware and Adware show advertisements but in case of adware, it gets installed by the computer user's consent as it is shown to the user that adware is getting installed. A user agrees to install adware as he/she wants to install useful software that is bundled with adware. If the user doesn't install the adware then main software (free one) or some free service, also doesn't get installed.

With Adware, paid ads are shown and computer user keystrokes and surfing habits are not tracked at all.

Popular example of Adware is Eudora (email client).

So, a spyware is a dangerous piece of unwanted code that comes to a PC in a hidden way, without that PC user realizing that the computer system is infected with malicious (bad intent) software/code – spyware.
